POMONA, Calif. - With only one week remaining in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, the first-place Cal Poly Pomona Broncos will take to the road to end the regular season. The games will take place on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
In the road trip, the CPP men's basketball program will take on Cal State San Bernardino at Coussoulis Arena on Thursday, travel north on Friday and then challenge the Humboldt State on Saturday.
Heading into the final weekend, the Broncos are locked in a tie with Chico State at the top of the CCAA. Both teams own a 16-4 conference mark. CPP has also secured a 20-5 overall record on the 2014-15 season. Thursday's opponent - CSUSB - currently sits in the middle of the CCAA with a 12-8 record in league play.
As they have been much of the season, CPP remains as the top-ranked defense in NCAA Division II, allowing a mere 55.8 points per game, a full point less than the nearest competitor.
Terrence Drisdom continues to pave the way for the Broncos on offense, averaging 15.7 points per game. CPP has outshot its opponents from three-point range and it's been a balanced attack with
Barry Bell knocking down 23 three-point field goals and then Drisdom,
Quentin Taylor, and
Jordan Finn following with 22 each.
The Coyotes have Jacob Thomas, who is the only player in the CCAA with a higher scoring average than Drisdom. With his 18 per contest, he leads the CCAA in the category.
After the Broncos take on San Bernardino, they will turn their sights to Humboldt. The Jacks have a 13-7 tally in conference play and carry a 19-6 overall mark on the season. HSU's squad features Calvin Young II and Austin Bryan, who hold the highest field-goal percentage and three-point percentage, respectively, in the CCAA.
Postseason PictureThe top six CCAA teams will advance to the conference tournament to be held in Stockton from March 5 through March 7 and the Broncos have clinched a spot in that event. The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, March 8, with the top West Region squads earning spots.
Due to their strong showing thus far this season, the Broncos have clinched a first-round bye. CPP's first playoff game will be Friday, March 6 in the semifinal round.
