CPP Splits With Lancers, Goes 1-1 on Friday

RIVERSIDE, Calif.- After a tricky weather forecast forced a doubleheader on Friday instead of Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos played two games against the Cal Baptist Lancers at Totman Stadium. The two squads each took home a win as CBU won 3-2 in the first game, and the Broncos earned a 1-0 victory for the Green and Gold in game two.

Both games saw a hard-fought and well-earned win come of them. The first game went into inning number 10 and the second was another extra-inning matchup with eight innings of play.

The split means CPP now carries a 10-3 record on the season, and currently holds a 2-1 lead in the series.

Game One: CBU 3- CPP 2

Starting things on the mound for the Broncos in Game One was Richie McWilliams. The game was his fourth appearance of the season, and he gave up one run on four hits while also recording a strikeout and a walk.

The Lancers' run against McWilliams came in the second inning as a single up the middle advanced the base runners and put the home team up 1-0.

After McWilliams dealt 3.1 innings for CPP, he was relieved by Erik Trask, who closed out the inning by forcing a fly ball to Kyle Garlick and striking out the last batter. In the top of the fourth, Ryan Webberley would tie things up for the Broncos as he sent a double down the left field line that scored Nicholas Bruno.

Michael Koval came in on the mound and provided three solid innings in relief. He added three strikeouts while allowing just one earned run and a trio of hits.

The Lancers' second run was scored in the bottom of the sixth as AJ David, who batted in the first run, once again put metal to the ball and racked up an RBI single. The score now stood at 2-1 in favor of Cal Baptist.

Playing the visiting role, the Broncos were forced to play catch up, and they did so in the eighth inning. With Christian Kelley at third base and Matt Muñoz at first, Garlick came to the plate and hit a grounder at the third baseman, who sent it to second in an attempt to double up Garlick and end the inning. He was unable to get the center fielder at first, so Kelley scored on a fielder's choice.

The ninth inning came and went with no changes in the game. Stephen Lohr of the Lancers was able to be a hero for CBU in the game though as a two-out homer in the bottom of the 10th gave them the 3-2 win.

Game Two: CPP 1- CBU 0

The final game of the doubleheader was a pitchers' duel as both sides had just five hits in the contest. Starting for the Broncos was veteran righty Chris Powell. The senior provided six scoreless innings for CPP while registering three strikeouts and allowing a mere four hits.

Coming in for the relief appearance and earning himself the win was Austin Boyle. Boyle finished the seventh inning in the game with a strikeout and sent the game into extra innings for the Broncos.

The top of the eighth was an eventful one for CPP, as the only run of the game crossed the plate. With Michael Zidek on second base, and Nick Cooksey up to bat, the first baseman sent a screamer to left that proved too difficult a play for the left fielder and allowed for Zidek to score. Cooksey did advance to second on the throw home, but no play was made.

Earning his seventh save on the season, J.J. Franklin came in to close it out for the Broncos in the bottom of the eighth and did so handily. He struck out the first two batters, allowed a small single to left center, and his final batter sent a line drive to Zidek in right, which was caught, and ended the game.

Assuming the weather remains advantageous, the Broncos and Lancers are scheduled to resume their play at Scolinos Field on Saturday for the final game of the series. Scheduled start time is 11 a.m.
