POMONA, Calif. – The nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team won its third series of the year on Saturday, picking up a 6-1 victory over Cal Baptist at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos took three of four games from CBU, a team competing out the PacWest Conference and picked to finish first in that league. With the result, CPP improves to 11-3 overall. The Broncos will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next weekend with a four-game set at Cal State Monterey Bay starting Friday.
CPP received a series of stellar pitching performances on Saturday, starting with freshman right-hander
Wyatt Shackleford. Making his Bronco debut, he went 3.2 innings and allowed just one run. Following him were
Ryan Alsworth and
Ryan Olson, both of whom turned in scoreless relief outings. Alsworth ended up with the win, the second of the season for him.
Despite committing three errors, the Broncos' offense and pitching success overshadowed the defensive miscues. Batting out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup, senior centerfielder
Kyle Garlick went 4-for-4 at the plate. Just a triple away from a cycle, Garlick hit his sixth homerun of the season as he continues to lead the CCAA in that stat. It also marked the first time this season that a Broncos' player had collected four hits in a single game.
Michael Zidek and
Ryan Webberley also put together multi-hit efforts, collecting two hits apiece.
The game progressed as a pitching duel early on as CPP took a 2-1 edge through the middle of the matchup. The Broncos extended their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, which included RBI singles from
Caleb Romo and Webberley.
CPP added two more scores in the eighth with Webberly knocking a two-run single to left center on a 1-2 pitch with two outs.
At 3-1 in conference play, the Broncos have a big matchup coming up Seaside next weekend. The first-place Otters of CSUMB are 10-4 overall and 6-0 in league action.
