Broncos Top Jacks; CCAA Title Game is Next

STOCKTON, Calif. - In Friday's semifinal round of the 2014-15 CCAA Championships Tournament, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured a 78-68 win over Humboldt State.

The victory advances the Broncos in the Saturday title game for the conference tournament. CPP will go up against Chico State, a squad that defeated Cal State Stanislaus earlier on Friday. With a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, the Broncos will be vying for their second CCAA Championships Tournament title in program history.

The CPP starting five played exceptionally well on Friday and three Broncos scored 22 points each: Daniel Rodriguez, Jordan Faison and Terrence Drisdom. For Rodriguez, it marked a career best as he also added four steals.

With the team's defense ranked No. 1 nationally, CPP racked up five blocks to match a season high. Faison contributed five assists while Drisdom and Barry Bell registered four each.

With a stellar 21-6 regular season record, the second-seeded Broncos reached the semifinal round after a first-round bye. Humboldt State advanced to the semifinal matchup after defeating Cal State San Bernardino 92-87 in overtime on Thursday night.

The Broncos and Jacks split their regular season series and HSU pulled off a 75-72 victory in the regular season finale, less than one week ago.

Friday's first half gave Stockton Arena a taste of the prowess of both teams, both well deserving of their tournament spots. The first basket in the game was made by Drisdom as he sank a jumper from just inside the three-point line.

Neither team had an opportunity to jump too far into the lead, as the largest by either at any given point was a mere five-point spread. Rodriguez proved to be a well-oiled offensive machine for the Broncos as he went 5-for-7 from the floor for the Broncos in the first half, registering nearly half of CPP's points.

The two squads entered halftime with a 30-30 tie score.

In the second half, the Broncos held Humboldt to a 38.9 shooting percentage from the field, while sinking 13-of-25 themselves en route to a 52 percent tally. CPP earned a large 11-point run in the game that brought them from behind and vaulted them into the lead.

The Bronco offense had multiple runs in the half, with the stellar defensive performances that came and subsequent points that were scored the Broncos worked their way to a double-digit lead by the end of the game.

HSU used up their timeouts relatively early in the half which allowed the Broncos to slow things down and stretch out the last minute of the game.

The final basket for CPP was Rodriguez's career-high point setting free throws. After those points, the Jacks leading scorer Austin Bryan put in three free throws and gave thegame its final 78-68 score.

Saturday's Matchup and Beyond
With the title matchup featuring the Broncos and Wildcats, the current all-time series features CPP with a 28-20 edge. Their last postseason meeting was Broncos' CCAA Tournament semifinal loss to Chico State in 2013-14 season.

The Broncos and Wildcats met in the 2012-13 CCAA Championships Tournament title game and CPP went on to win 78-64 for its first-ever championship win in the event.

Entering this week, the Broncos were featured at No. 6 in West Region while Chico held No. 5 spot. The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday beginning at 7:30 p.m. The top eight teams in the region will advance into the NCAA tournament.
