POMONA, Calif. – Making its 11th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will meet a familiar foe in Dixie State for a 5 p.m. first-round game Friday in Azusa.
The eight-team regional will be hosted at the Felix Event Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific. CPP students can receive free admission if they bring their Bronco ID. More schedule and ticket details are at the bottom of this page.
The Broncos, ranked 24th nationally in the latest Division II poll, hold an overall record of 23-6 after capturing the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships tournament title last weekend.
CPP has reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons and the Broncos defeated Dixie State in last year's first round in San Bernardino. Heading into the 2015 West Region Tournament, CPP holds the No. 5 seed while the Red Storm earned the No. 4 spot.
In the 2014 first-round matchup between the two teams,
Jordan Faison scored 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting. The CPP defense held Dixie to 37.7-percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers. Four Red Storm players scored in double figures that game, including returners DeQuan Thompson and Zach Robbins.
This will be the sixth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for Dixie State (20-7), a squad that captured its fifth Pacific West Conference title this year. Red Storm head coach Jon Judkins is in his 10th year with the program and owns a 166-85 record at Dixie.
In the Broncos' CCAA tournament title win over Chico on Saturday, Faison scored a team-high 17 points en route to earning CCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Joining him on the All-Tournament Team were
Terrence Drisdom and
Daniel Rodriguez.
At last week's CCAA awards banquet, Drisdom received Player of the Year honors while Faison joined him on the All-CCAA First Team.
Barry Bell and Rodriguez also collected All-Conference honors. The Broncos continue to rank at No. 1 nationally in defense, limiting opponents to 56.3 points per game.
Overall in program history, CPP owns a 23-10 record in NCAA Tournament games. The Broncos captured the national title in 2010. This year's winner of the West Region crown will advance to the Division II Elite Eight in Evansville, Ind.
