Buzzer Beater! Drisdom, Broncos Sink Dixie

AZUSA, Calif. - With a spirited crowd on its feet, Terrence Drisdom tossed in a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to lift Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball to a thrilling 62-60 win over Dixie State Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The victory advances CPP (24-6) into a Saturday 7:30 p.m. matchup against No. 1 seed and host Azusa Pacific. In the most recent Division II national poll, the Broncos were featured at No. 24 while the Cougars hold the No. 14 spot.

The West Regional is being held at the Felix Event Center on the campus of APU. There will be a free shuttle ride Saturday for Broncos' students, who can also earn free admission with their university ID. The sign-up form for the bus is at broncoathletics.com/bus.

Drisdom finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting. He collected seven steals to match his career high, while also adding four assists and three rebounds. Joining him in double figures were Jordan Faison and Daniel Rodriguez with respective point totals of 16 and 13.

Both the Broncos and Red Storm (20-8) finished with similar team totals. CPP held a slim 27-24 edge at halftime and through the full 40 minutes, the lead changed hands 12 times.

After Dixie tied the game 60-60 on a three-pointer with 26 seconds to play, the Broncos held on for the final possession. Dribbling across the free throw line area, Drisdom sank the fadeaway shot with a defender's hand in his face. The CPP players piled on Drisdom and the many Broncos' fans in attendance went wild.

Quentin Taylor put together an impressive performance off the bench, collecting nine points and seven rebounds. Five of those boards came on the offensive end.

CPP jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with that run capped off by a Drisdom triple. The margin widened to double digits - 20-8 - later in the half, but Dixie stormed back to trim the CPP edge to 27-24 heading into halftime.

The Red Storm scored the first five points of the second half to take a lead and the matchup went wire-to-wire the rest of the way. Although the turnover margin wasn't too large with the Broncos committing 15 and the Red Storm at 17, CPP capitalized on those mistakes with 28 points off turnovers.

At the 14:07 mark in the second half, a Drisdom steal led to a fastbreak dunk and that put CPP in front 39-35. A Faison slam with 1:46 pushed the Broncos' edge to 60-55 but the Red Storm wouldn't go away. While CPP went scoreless after the Faison dunk, Dixie evened the score at 60-60. Drisdom snapped the scoring drought in a big way, sinking the decisive shot.

Saturday's opponent - Azusa Pacific - earned a 75-67 win Friday over Western Oregon. Early this season, CPP topped APU with an 81-78 overtime win.
