ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – On Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split its doubleheader with the Sonoma State Seawolves. A four-run inning in game one boosted the Broncos into the winner's circle, while a shaky first inning proved too difficult to bounce back from in game two.
With the split, the Broncos hold a 15-6 season tally, with a 7-4 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Seawolves' record now stands at 12 wins and 11 losses with a 7-8 conference record.
GAME ONE: CPP 9, SSU 6 Richie McWilliams took the mound for the Broncos in the bottom of the first with a two run advantage over the Seawolves.
Kyle Garlick sent his seventh shot of the year careening over the left field wall, scoring
Christian Kelley in the process.
The junior starting pitcher was given another couple runs of support in the top of the second inning after Kelley came to the plate and sent a double to right center, scoring
Jonathon Reynoso and
Ryan Webberley on the knock.
The next couple of runs in the game came for the home team as they scored a run in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Part way through the fourth inning after allowing just two hits while adding three strikeouts to the board, McWilliams was relieved by
Michael Koval who finished out the inning.
Webberley rocked a double down the right field line in the fifth and scored
Caleb Romo, bringing the score to 5-2 in CPP's favor. SSU answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning and the next couple innings remained silent offensively.
In the eighth inning the Broncos added four runs to the board as
Nick Cooksey provided a bases loaded single followed immediately by a double by
Michael Zidek which brought three around to score.
Sonoma posted three more runs throughout the rest of the game, bringing the score to its final 9-6 result. McWilliams earned the win in the game, his first of the season.
GAME TWO: SSU 4, CPP 3 The second game saw the offense of the home squad spark in the first inning. SSU added three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Chris Powell started the game for CPP and threw all six innings. He racked up three strikeouts and allowed just five hits, and only two after the opening inning.
Sonoma added their final and eventual winning run to the game in the bottom of the third as a member of their team belted a homer over the right field fence.
CPP added a run to the board in the fifth inning as Kelley batted in the designated hitter spot and sent
Mike Philp home on a single to right.
In the Broncos' second to last attempt at the plate, they scored a pair of runs with singles by Philp and
Nicholas Bruno. Bruno's single proved to be the last run to score in the game and at the middle of the seventh, the final score sat at Sonoma State 4, Cal Poly Pomona 3.
NEXT GAME The Broncos and Seawolves return to action Sunday with an 11 a.m. start in Rohnert Park. The series currently stands at Sonoma State with two wins to the Broncos' one.
