POMONA, Calif. - With the latest National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) placing the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team at No. 1 in the West Region, the Broncos will head north to challenge the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this weekend in SeasideÂ
Â
Thus far this season, CPP has won all three of its four-game series. The Broncos started off the season sweeping Dixie State and then split a two-game series with Azusa Pacific. To start CCAA play, CPP took three of four games from Cal State San Bernardino. Most recently, the Broncos took three of four from Cal Baptist.
Â
With a conference record of 3-1, the Broncos will go up against Monterey Bay - the only undefeated team in CCAA play.
Â
CSUMB is 8-0 in the CCAA after sweeping both the Cal State East Bay Pioneers and the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. Last season when the two squads met at Scolinos Field in mid-February, the Broncos earned a four-game sweep of then nationally-ranked Otters.
Â
In his first season wearing CPP's Green and Gold,
Kyle Garlick leads the team in a few offensive categories. He is one of four Broncos who have started in all 14 games this season, recording a .370 batting average in 54 at-bats. He is the conference leader for runs scored (17) and homeruns (6). Â
Â
The Chino Hills native also holds a .933 slugging percentage in conference play and has 43 total bases, both of which are also CCAA-leading stats. His 14 runs batted in this season head up the Broncos and places him in fifth place in conference.
Â
With seven saves on the season,
J.J. Franklin has a massive lead over the nearest competitor. There are five guys tied for second place with two saves apiece. Each save that the senior locks down adds to the school record he set with his second save of the season.
Â
Franklin's fellow senior
Chris Powell has proven to be a dominating force thus far in the starting pitcher role for CPP, securing a 2-0 record and standing in second place in conference with a 0.42 earned run average.
Â
The weekend's series is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside. The two teams will then resume the series in a doubleheader on Saturday, and finish off with an 11 a.m. start for a single game on Sunday.Â
