STOCKTON, Calif. – In a battle of conference rivals Saturday in Stockton, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team captured its second CCAA Championships tournament title with a 62-57 overtime victory over Chico State.
 
It marked the first overtime title game in CCAA tournament history and the Broncos used excellent free throw shooting and top-notch defense to stifle the Wildcats down the stretch.
 
Jordan Faison scored a team-high 17 points en route to earning CCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Joining him on the All-Tournament Team were Terrence Drisdom and Daniel Rodriguez. Drisdom was just behind Faison with 15 points in the game and Rodriguez had seven. Barry Bell also boosted the Bronco Offense with eight points himself. Defensively Drisdom grabbed nine boards and three steals. Also in the three steal club was Bell and Rodriguez. 
 
The Broncos shot 78.3 percent from the free throw line and Drisdom sank a pair of free throws late in regulation to help push the game into overtime. The result helped CPP avenge the regular season sweep in favor of Chico.

Drisdom kicked things off Saturday as he sank a shot from beyond the arc to give CPP a quick 3-0 lead. As would be expected from two closely matched teams, the rest of the half was so close that neither team was more than a shot or two from changing the leader.
 
The Broncos' largest run in the half was the one that led both teams into the break. CPP entered the locker room on a 7-0 run, which gave the first half its 29-26 result.
 
Three minutes into the second period Chad Haysbert had a dunk that sparked a 7-point run for the CPP offense, placing them seven up on the tournament's No. 1 seeded Wildcats.  In a game as crucial as this, no lead is a comfortable one, and as such the Broncos had to remain vigilant and protect the lead.
 
The No. 1 nationally-ranked defense of head coach Greg Kamansky remained true to its ranking and forced 14 turnovers in the second half. After Chico took a late lead Drisdom had a pair of fortuitous free throws that sent the game to overtime.
 
In the regular season the Broncos went to overtime three times, and had victories in all three. Chico State was sent into free basketball with five such games under its belt and the last three games were wins.
 
With just under 20 seconds on the clock, and potentially Chico's final chance to tie the game Bell and Rodriguez had an all out tug-of-war to force a jump ball that fell in the Broncos' favor.  Quentin Taylor came to the line and added two more to the scoreboard for CPP, putting them four up on the Wildcats, the Drisdom came in, sank two more from the line and gave the game its final 62-57 result.
