Franklin sets Save Record in CPP's 1-0 Win!

SEASIDE, Calif.- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team finished the weekend series against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Sunday with a 1-0 win. With that the Broncos won the series 3-1 and dealt CSUMB its third regular season loss. The game was truly a pitching battle.

Ryan Olson started on the mound and earned the win after dealing five scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits in the game and racked up a career-high seven strikeouts. The sophomore recorded his second win of the season with the showing.

J.J. Franklin, the Broncos go-to closer, secured his ninth save of the season in the victory. The save broke the school record for number of saves in a single season which was set by the senior just last season. He only faced three batters in the ninth inning, as that was all he needed to do the deed.

The Green and Gold improve to an overall 14-4 record on the season, complete with a 6-2 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

Crossing the plate for the only run in the game was Nick Cooksey. Ryan Webberley came up with the bases loaded and got plunked with a wild pitch, advancing all the runners and putting up a one in the fourth inning for CPP.

After Olson's stellar performance on the mound, Austin Boyle came in to relieve him and provided two more solid innings for the CPP defense. Three of the nine batters he faced go struck out, and only a mere hit was allowed.

Zach Williams took the bump in the bottom of the eighth and saw just three batters, striking out two of them and causing a fly ball for the third.

The series proved to be a fantastic showing for Nick Cooksey as he secured two hits in four at bats and scored the lone run in the fourth. Caleb Romo also added a pair of hits from the designated hitter spot. The only two other Broncos that recorded a hit were Michael Zidek and Brennen Salgado.

Pitching was the key to today's slow offensive output on either side, the Broncos had 12 strikeouts in the matchup, and the Otters registered nine.

CPP will return to action with a four-game series next weekend at Sonoma State. The first game in Rohnert Park is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13. The Seawolves are currently an even 10-10 on the season, with a 5-7 conference mark.
