ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped the first game of the road series to the Sonoma State Seawolves on Friday after a five-run first inning gave the home team the lead for the remainder of the game.
Â
On the mound for the Broncos and dealing 6.2 innings was
Max Bethell. The unfortunate first inning for the junior provided the Seawolves with a big rally but after that inning, the rest of the lefty's time on the mound was stellar.
Â
The first inning for SSU saw them earn five runs on six hits. The final 5.2 innings on the bump for Bethell allotted just two hits while adding six more strikeouts for a total of seven in the contest, and allowing zero walks. He ended the showing with five runs allowed on eight hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Â
Prior to the Seawolves' runs, CPP put up the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly by
Michael Zidek. His fly ball to right field scored
Christian Kelley from third.
Â
All three of the Broncos' runs in the game were, in fact, scored by Kelley. In the sixth inning
Nick Cooksey hit a ground ball to the pitcher that resulted in CPP's second run of the game.
Â
In the eighth inning, a very similar situation occurred as a single from Cooksey scored Kelley and moved
Kyle Garlick to second base.
Â
Kelley, the Green and Gold's leadoff hitter and starting catcher on Friday, recorded two hits in the contest as he went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. Garlick, Cooksey, and
Brennen Salgado added the other three hits in the game.
Â
CPP and the Seawolves will return to action Saturday with a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
Â
Also in Bronco Athletics…Â
