POMONA, Calif. – The No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped game one of the series with the Cal State East Bay Pioneers 7-4 on Friday.
The Broncos, after the loss, settle to an overall 25-10 mark on the season, complete with a 17-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Playing the role of visitor this weekend, the Pioneers now hold a 6-19 record in conference play and a 9-23 overall tally.
CPP did prove to be first on the board, but the Green and Gold were unable to hold onto the lead in the game and found themselves trailing in the fourth and chasing throughout the remainder of the contest.
Chris Powell started for the Broncos and threw a total of 5.2 innings, complete with seven strikeouts. Unfortunately in his outing the Pioneers rallied for and post four earned runs on seven hits.
Three other CPP pitchers tried to shut down the Pioneer offense, but three additional runners crossed the plate giving them their total of seven runs.
CPP's runs came in the second inning as
Jacob Bernardy provided a single that scored
Caleb Romo from third. In the seventh inning,
Kyle Garlick sent his 12th long ball of the season over the fence and added a pair of RBI as he scored himself and
Christian Kelley.
Garlick, Kelley, and
Nick Cooksey each had two hits on the day, with Kelley going 2-for-3 as he also walked and was hit by a pitch.
The Broncos' final run in the series opener was on a groundout by Bernardy to third base, which, in the process scored Matt Muñoz and gave CPP its fourth and final run.
Eight of the Broncos' starters recorded hits in the game, and despite not registering a hit,
Nicholas Bruno walked twice. Therefore, each member of the CPP offense reached base safely in the contest.
The Broncos will host CSUEB for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game set to begin at 11 a.m.
