POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos improved their first-place lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) after securing an 8-1 win over San Francisco State. With the win, the Broncos have recorded 26 wins in conference play to set a new program record.
Â
CPP now holds an overall 34-13 tally, complete with those 26 wins and 11 losses in the CCAA. The Gators will host Saturday's doubleheader with an 18-27 season tally and a 16-21 record in conference.
Â
Keeping with the trend,
Ryan Olson provided the Broncos with a stellar performance from the bump. He earned his ninth win and racked up six strikeouts while allowing only one walk and two batters to get a hit. He exited the game after the sixth inning with an 8-0 lead.
Â
Each member of the CPP starting offense recorded at least one hit in the contest, with three members of the Broncos earning a multi-hit game. CPP finished with 12 total hits on offense, while the Broncos' pitching staff allowed a mere three Gator knocks.
Â
The Green and Gold's first runs in the game came in the third inning.
Christian Kelley drew a walk to start things off, then
Kyle Garlick came up and improved his on-base streak to 29 games, lining a single up the middle.
Nick Cooksey laid down the perfect bunt, just out of reach of outstretched Gator arms, providing CPP with the loaded bases.
Â
Matt Munoz took advantage of the one out situation and sent a hard grounder to the second baseman, he was unable to double up the Broncos though and CPP's first run crossed.
Ryan Webberley then singled to left and scored Garlick for his first of two runs batted in.
Â
In the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead,
Mike Philp led off the inning with a double and later scored on a single up the middle from
Nicholas Bruno. The fifth inning proved to be relatively uneventful before CPP broke through for five runs in the sixth.
Â
To lead off the inning, in the pitcher's ballpark that is Maloney Field,
Ryan Webberley launched his third homerun of the season over the left field fence (only the fourth homer of 2015 at SFSU), giving CPP the 4-0 lead. From there the hits didn't stop. Philp got on and Bruno singled him over.
Jacob Bernardy added a double to his resume and a pair of RBI. Garlick singled and scored Bernardy, then Munoz singled and scored Cooksey. A total of five runs on five hits with one error is what comprised the CPP sixth.
Olson was relieved by
Zach Williams, who pitched two scoreless and allowed only one hit while striking out two. Then taking the closer role was
Erik Trask, who gave up the only Gator run, despite not allowing a hit. A walk, balk, and a sacrifice fly were what was needed to put the home team on the board. The run gave the contest its final 8-1 score.
Â
The two squads will return to action Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Maloney Field. Game two will begin about 30 minutes after the close of game one.
