Slow Bats Halt Broncos' Win Streak, Fall 2-1

WALNUT, Calif.- A slow game at the plate for the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos ends with a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Dixie State Red Storm. The loss marks the Broncos' first of the NCAA Division II West Regional.
 
CPP will play Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. elimination game against Cal Baptist. The loss, CPP's first in the last five games, drops the Green and Gold to an overall tally of 40-15 on the 2015 season.
 
Cody Ponce pitched for the Broncos and recorded a complete game with his eight-inning showing. His stellar effort included just six hits and two runs, neither of which was earned. He also tallied six strikeouts and dealt a total of 122 pitches.
 
After opening the day with a 12-run, 16-hit performance over Point Loma, the Bronco offense struggled to find a groove and was only able to get two hits up on the board. Kyle Garlick and Matt Muñoz provided CPP with the hits.
 
The lone Bronco run in the game scored in the seventh inning. Leading off the inning was Garlick who singled to the shortstop. He then moved to second after the Red Storm's third baseman committed an error that allowed Nick Cooksey to reach safely. Garlick's attempt to move to third was halted as a fielder's choice at the hand of Michael Zidek caught him heading to the hot corner.
 
Continuing the inning and getting CPP's first run of the game was Mike Philp. The senior first baseman flew out to left but his shot was far enough to allow Cooksey the chance and time to score. Philp was the final batter for the Red Storm's starting pitcher who dealt 6.2 innings of two-hit ball.
