Broncos Earn Record Win 44 With 13-2 Victory

D-II National Championships: Bracket | Tournament Central | Postgame Press Conference

CARY, N.C.- All-American sophomore pitcher Ryan Olson collected a career-high 14 strikeouts Tuesday, leading the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to a 13-2 win over Truman State in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II World Series.

Since moving the series to Cary, N.C. Olson's 14 strikeouts provides the NCAA DII CWS with a new single-game record. Putting him in the books once again as he was also a member of the U18 Gold Medal winning USA squad.

It marks the Broncos' 44th victory of the season to set a new program record. At 44-16 overall, CPP will play Wednesday at 1 p.m. Pacific (4 p.m. Eastern) against Mercyhurst, a team ranked at No. 3 nationally. The Broncos were featured at No. 8 in the most recent D-II poll.

The Broncos launched three homeruns, including two from Mike Philp and one from Nick Cooksey. Philp entered Tuesday's matchup with one career homerun for CPP. Nicholas Bruno went 4-for-5 on the day, adding four runs scored and an RBI along the way. Kyle Garlick, Philp and Matt Munoz also contributed multi-hit performances.

Olson tossed eight stellar innings, allowing only two runs on six hits. Offensively, the 13 runs were the most in a Broncos' World Series game since 1976. The win improved the sophomore's record to 12-0 this season.

The second inning saw a pair of Bulldogs cross the plate as a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and provided the opportunity for the Truman team to add two runs. They were first on the board in the game.

CPP answered back in the bottom half of the inning however as a single from Bruno brought Matt Munoz home from third. Munoz reached safely with a single to lead off the inning. After Bruno reached, Jacob Bernardy and Garlick reached safely. Then Christian Kelley drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the Green and Gold's second run of the game, tying things up with the Bulldogs.

Looking to the fourth inning, Garlick once again comes in clutch for the Broncos. He sent a long double off the left center fence to score both Bruno and Philp and give the Green and Gold the 4-2 advantage heading into the fifth inning.

CPP took advantage of the Bulldogs' pitching staff and added a few insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Philp came up with Munoz on base and belted the long ball over the left field fence to put the Green and Gold up 6-2. It marked his first of the year and came at the perfect time.

Keeping his bat hot, Garlick drove a single to the left side and brought in Bruno. The score then stood at 7-2 in favor of the Broncos heading into the top of the sixth inning.

In the seventh the Broncos added another run as Munoz sent a long sacrifice fly down the left field line that gave Garlick enough time to tag-up and put CPP up 8-2.

In his final at-bat of the day, Philp launched his second homerun of both the game and his season and provided the Green and Gold with run No. 9.

Kelley came up in the eighth to add run No. 10 with a single over the second baseman's head. Then Cooksey provided his first hit of the series in a big way. He launched the Broncos' third homerun of the game and added three runs to the board for CPP. Scoring on that was Kelley and Bruno. That gave the game its final 13-2 score.
