SAN FRANCISCO – In a tribute to the difficulty and unpredictability of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team found themselves dropping the final game of the 2015 regular season 7-2 to San Francisco State.
The Broncos secured the title of CCAA Champions on Saturday night after sweeping the doubleheader in San Francisco. Sunday's game was senior day for the Gators and nine of their squad members played the final game of their collegiate career.
The Broncos will continue their season on Thursday as they head to the University of the Pacific for the first round of the CCAA Postseason. They enter the tournament with the No. 1 seed in the tourney and will play the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 3 p.m.
With the loss, the Broncos drop to an overall 36-14 record, complete with a 28-12 mark in conference play. They secured the series, winning three games to one.
It proved to be a staff day for the Broncos as five different pitchers took the mound in the series and season finale.
Ryan Alsworth,
Richie McWilliams,
Chris Powell,
Wyatt Shackleford, and
Austin Boyle dealt for the Broncos.
It was a decent day for the Broncos' hitters, as they secured nine hits as a team, unfortunately the hits weren't falling at the right times, so only the two runs were scored. Both CPP runs came in the eighth inning.
The first run for the Green and Gold came on a
Caleb Romo shot to the second baseman that scored Matt Munoz. Crossing the plate for the second and final CPP run was
Antonio Lopez who reached safely after getting hit by a pitch.
Earlier in the game, Lopez came in to pinch hit in the designated hitter spot and secured his first collegiate hit after singling to the center fielder. He was 2-for-2 on the day.
Kyle Garlick and Lopez led the Broncos offensively. Garlick recorded two hits in two at-bats and improving his reached-base-safely streak to 32-consecutive games.
