STOCKTON, Calif. – A five-run first inning Thursday propelled the No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to a 6-1 victory in round one of the CCAA Tournament as the Broncos topped the No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills.
With the victory CPP improves to a season tally of 37-14, which marks the most wins in a single season for head coach
Randy Betten. The Broncos also improve to a 5-4 CCAA postseason record under his leadership. The CPP win marks the team's fourth against the Toros this season.
CPP will take on UC San Diego Friday at 7 p.m. at Klein Family Field in Stockton, with the winner moving into Saturday's tournament title game.
The Broncos posted a five-run first inning to vault themselves into the lead and provide a score that was just too much for the Toros to match.
Ryan Olson started on the bump for CPP and earned career and season win number 10. He allowed just three hits and one runner to score while also racking up four strikeouts through five innings.
CPP's first inning started with a leadoff walk to
Christian Kelley, he then advanced as
Kyle Garlick reached on an error by the shortstop.
Nick Cooksey then had a perfect bunt that allowed both Kelley and Garlick to advance and loaded the bases. Next, a pair of Broncos scored as
Michael Zidek reached on a fielder's choice in which the second baseman overthrew his mark.
Matt Munoz then came up and singled to right field, he scored both Zidek and Cooksey and pushed the Broncos up 4-0. The final run came with a
Mike Philp single to center. His knock scored Munoz and gave CPP its fifth run.
The next run in the game was not posted until the fourth inning where the Toros scored on a wild pitch that took a terrible hop away from Kelley. The scoreboard read 5-1 after that. CPP would post one more run in the bottom half of the next inning. Garlick scored again on another Munoz single.
