POMONA, Calif. – With the 852nd overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos' All-American center fielder
Kyle Garlick. The senior was picked in the 28th round.
"I'm very excited to get the chance to recognize a lifelong dream," said Garlick. "I am grateful to the Dodgers for giving me the opportunity to play at the next level and pursue that dream."
"I am happy for Garlick to get an opportunity to go play professional baseball," said head coach
Randy Betten. "We are glad he chose to finish his collegiate career here at Cal Poly Pomona. I look forward to following his career as he goes on the professional level. "
He is one of five Broncos to be selected in the 2015 Draft as he is joined by
Cody Ponce,
Christian Kelley,
Chris Powell, and
Richie McWilliams. Five members of the CPP team getting selected marks the highest total since 1985, and increases the number drafted under head coach
Randy Betten to 10 in his five seasons.
Garlick arrived at CPP with just his senior season to play, but don't let his short time deter you, he immediately made an impact as the biggest bat in the Green and Gold's already stellar offensive lineup.
The Chino Hills native finished off his season with a .358 batting average, a number that landed him top five on the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Leaderboards. At the conclusion of the season he also led the conference with 56 runs batted in and 17 homeruns.
Garlick's 17 homeruns led the Cal Poly Pomona squad and set a new record for the Broncos, besting the previous single-season record set in 2010 by Travis Taijeron. He led the conference in a number of categories, including runs (70), hits (87), HRs, RBI, Total bases (162), plate appearances (292), and games played with 63.
His .667 slugging percentage and .452 on base percentage led the Broncos as well. With his performance this season, the outfielder was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American team.
The Bronco's full-time starter was also named a member of the All-West Region First Team and All-CCAA First Team. He was named to both the West Region and CCAA Tournament Team.
If he signs, Garlick would likely play for one of the following Los Angeles Dodgers minor league affiliates: AZL Dodgers (Rookie), Ogen Raptors (Rookie), Great Lakes Loons (Low-A), or the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High-A).
