AZUSA , Calif.- A local soccer matchup between the PacWest's Azusa Pacific Cougars and CCAA's Cal Poly Pomona ended with the Broncos earning the victory. The final score of the game was 2-1.
With the win, the Broncos improve to a 3-0-1 tally thus far in the 2015 season.
In the game's 20th minute, CPP's senior
Christian Gonzalez Diaz provided the Green and Gold with the first goal of the game. A pass from
Michael Torres found
Sergi Monso, who crossed from the right side to allow Gonzalez Diaz the opportunity to head it past the APU goalkeeper.
Stats for the first half show the Broncos outshooting the Cougars 5-1. Both keepers recorded a save in the half.
The second half saw
Justyn Peeples, one of CPP's steadfast defenders, score his first career goal. His goal ended up being the winning score of the game as a later shot by APU would give them one.
Peeples' goal was a header as well, with a pass from Gonzalez Diaz. His ball got past the Cougars' keeper and provided CPP with the much needed security goal.
Seven minutes after Peeples scored, the APU offense put themselves on the board as a pass from the middle of the field to the right side of the goal allowed them to eke one by the Green and Gold's defense and find the back of the net.
The second half continued to show CPP's offensive tenacity as eight shots were taken to the home team's three.
Gonzalez Diaz' score in the first half was his second of the season and No. 12 as a Bronco.
CPP's next game will take place on Tuesday as the Broncos return home to Kellogg Field to host the Red Storm of Dixie State. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a popsicle courtesy of the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Department.
