SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program earned a 1-1 tie on Sunday as they played visitor to the Cal State San Marcos Cougars. CPP's loan goal in the second half came at the hands of
Christian Gonzalez Diaz.
CPP now holds a 3-1-2 record on the season, complete with a 0-1-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Cougars, as it stands, have a 2-2-2 record on the season thus far, with a 0-1-1 mark in conference play.
With an early goal in the ninth minute of the game, the hometown Cougars were first on the board. A dead ball 22 yards out gave Louie Farfan the opportunity to score and he took it. It marked his third goal of the season and gave CSUSM a quick 1-0 lead.
After the halftime break,
Christian Gonzalez Diaz pulled even with
Sergi Monso for the Broncos' leader spot in goals scored. A pass from
Michael Torres allowed the senior forward an open shot from six yards out. His header marked the third goal he has provided for the Green and Gold this season.
Jason Trejos earned three saves in the goal for CPP in his first game played in 2015. He faced 11 total shots from the Cougars and allowed just one to reach the back of the net.
Looking at the game wrapup, the CSUSM squad did outshoot the Broncos 11 shots to seven. Strong play by the Green and Gold's defense though prevailed and just the one shot made it to the net.
The Broncos will continue their season on Friday, Sept. 25 as they host the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. CSUDH will head to Kellogg Field after going 2-0 to start conference play. They bested Humboldt and Sonoma 3-1 and 4-1, respectively.
Friday night's game will mark the annual Pack the Stands night for the Broncos as CPP celebrates the beginning of another new year and new athletic season. The first 100 fans will receive pizza courtesy of Bronco Athletics. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
