POMONA, Calif. – Game one of the 2015 men's soccer season is in the books and it will go down as a tie. The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team and the hometown Fresno Pacific Sunbirds battled for 110 minutes, but the game would result in a 2-2 tie.
CPP scored first in the season opener at Ramirez Field as a shot from
Alexander Turkson found the back of the goal.
Sergi Monso sent a pass to Turkson that he was able to capitalize on to get the Broncos on the board. The Ghana native was second on squad last season with six goals.
The first goal was scored in the 37th minute of the first half and with a score of 1-0, the game went to halftime. In the first half, the Green and Gold outshot the Sunbirds 8-5. Tending to the goal in the game,
Fernando Pablo Quevedo made two saves in the first half.
In the 73rd minute of the game, the Sunbirds tied it up as they were able to sneak one by the Broncos' defense. Jorge Chedraui posted his first goal of the year on the play.
In minute 83, Bronco newcomer, Monso scored his first goal in his debut game with the Green and Gold. With just under seven minutes to play in the game the Broncos took the lead 2-1. Earning the assist on the goal was senior forward
Christian Gonzalez Diaz.
With just over a minute to play, the Sunbirds pulled even again, a successful header on a corner kick gave them their second goal and once time ran out the game was sent to overtime.
As regulation time ended, the Broncos and Sunbirds were sent to overtime. Through 20 minutes and two periods of overtime neither team was able to score so the game resulted in a 2-2 tie. The second half and the two overtimes saw the Green and Gold again best the competition in shots taken, outshooting the Sunbirds 8-6.
The Broncos will continue their roadtrip with a game in San Diego. CPP heads to Point Loma to challenge the Seawolves on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
Looking ahead to next week, the Broncos will play their home opener at Kellogg Field on Sept. 10 with a 7 p.m. start against Cal Baptist. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a Men's Soccer Schedule Poster courtesy of Bronco Athletics.
