@cppmsoccer Will Host Home Opener Against CBU

POMONA, Calif. – With a pair of games under their belt, the Broncos of the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will host the Cal Baptist Lancers on Thursday at 7 p.m. The matchup will be the first of the season that the CPP men's squad has played at Kellogg Field.

The first 100 fans in attendance at the game will receive schedule posters courtesy of Cal Poly Pomona Athletics and the men's soccer program. The poster features the Broncos' upcoming games and the Green and Gold's nine seniors who are completing their final season of eligibility with the Broncos.

The two teams met last season with the Broncos emerging victorious. Two second-half goals pushed the Green and Gold to the finish line as they blanked the Lancers for their fifth-consecutive shutout of the season.

All-time, the record between the squads stands in the Broncos' favor as they have tallied four wins, zero losses, and one tie.

Thus far in the 2015 campaign, the Green and Gold have played two games, tying the season opener against Fresno Pacific 2-2 and earning a 1-0 win over the Sea Lions of Point Loma.

In the contests the Broncos have seen an emergence of a new offensive threat. A Barcelona, Spain native, Sergi Monso has scored two of the Broncos' three goals and provided the assist for the third goal.

Monso's first goal came late in the game against the FPU Sunbirds. His shot put the CPP squad up 2-1 at the time, but a late goal from the home team sent the game to overtime and the Broncos were unable to score again, thus, the game ended 2-2.

The second goal from the sophomore midfielder came with just minutes to go till the end of regulation in CPP's game against the PLNU Sea Lions. He took advantage of a jumble in front of the goal and with a bicycle kick, sent one past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, giving the Broncos the first goal, and eventually the game.

After the Broncos host their home opener, they will hit the road again by traveling less than 10 miles to reach the Azusa Pacific Cougars campus and the Cougar Soccer Field. Last season, the Broncos bested the local rivals 1-0 and hold a slight all-time lead which tallies to 8-7-1 in the Green and Gold's favor. This Saturday's game at APU will take place at 2 p.m.
