POMONA, Calif. - After winning two road matches last week, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team carries plenty of momentum into its pair of home contests that will close out the regular season.
Having moved up to No. 4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos are aiming to clinch a spot in the conference tournament. The top six teams at the end of the regular season on Saturday afternoon will advance to the CCAA postseason that begins on Nov. 1 at campus sites. The semifinal and final rounds of the event will take place at Stanislaus State in Turlock.
CPP helped its chances of qualifying with wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. this past weekend. The Broncos defeated the Golden Eagles on Friday 2-0 with goals from
Natalie Di Angelo and
Sydney Yates. Then on Sunday, CPP topped the Toros 1-0 as
Lauren Miller netted the game winner.
This week, the Broncos host Cal State San Marcos at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The first 80 CPP students will receive a free phone wallet courtesy of Student Health & Counseling Services.
Then on Saturday, CPP will challenge UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m. for Senior Day at Kellogg Field. The first 75 students will receive a free mini stapler courtesy of Campus Recreation. Prior to the women's soccer match, the Broncos will recognize the athletic and academic achievements of
Hailey James,
Shavonn Johnson,
Lauren Miller and
Tori Tappero.
The Broncos have featured a balanced offense this season with 11 players earning at least one point. Yates has collected a team-high 13 points with five goals and three assists while
Hailey James has contributed seven points from two goals and three assists. Yates, James and Di Angelo have tallied two game-winning scores apiece.
Just with the results of last weekend, CPP's shutout tally in 2016 went from two to four. That achievement is a credit to junior goalkeeper
Ricki Ives and the backline of defenders in front of her.
Emily Sanchez and Di Angelo have joined Ives as the three Broncos who have played more than 1,200 minutes this season.
