CPP Falls 2-1 to UC San Diego on Senior Day

CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament

POMONA, Calif. -
After celebrating the achievements of four senior student-athletes on Sunday morning, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team was dealt a 2-1 loss to nationally-ranked UC San Diego.

The Broncos have earned one more game at Kellogg Field as they'll aim to start a long playoff run on Tuesday with a first-round CCAA Tournament matchup against Stanislaus State. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. The men's soccer game between CPP and Cal State LA will begin that day at 7 p.m. at Kellogg Field.

This will be the 11th all-time appearance for the Broncos in the conference tournament. Once the first round is completed at campus sites on Tuesday, the semifinal and final rounds of the event will take place at Stanislaus State in Turlock.

The group of four CPP seniors includes Hailey James, Shavonn Johnson, Lauren Miller and Tori Tappero. With the effort of those four Broncos, the women's soccer program is entering its third-consecutive season of reaching the playoffs.

On Sunday against the Tritons, CPP jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Tappero scored in the 17th minute. She dribbled into the box and stepped past the goalkeeper before knocking in a shot. It marked the first goal of the season for Tappero and second of her career.

The Broncos took the 1-0 lead into halftime despite UCSD holding a 5-1 edge in shots. The visiting squad kept the pressure up in the second half and managed to score two goals to complete the comeback win. Mary Reilly struck for the equalizer in the 64th minute and then Katie O'Laughlin netted the game winner at the 74:58 mark.
