Broncos, Tritons to Battle for West Title

POMONA, Calif. – In the first-ever men's soccer postseason matchup between Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego, the stakes couldn't be higher.

The Broncos and Tritons will compete in La Jolla on Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner receives the West Region trophy and a spot in Sunday's quarterfinal round.

The two squads have played each other once this season. UCSD topped CPP on Oct. 29 at Kellogg Field by a 2-1 score. The Broncos led 2-0 until the final five minutes of regulation but the Tritons scored two quick goals to capture the comeback victory.

To reach the West Region title game, CPP topped Sonoma State 2-0 in the first round and advanced past Simon Fraser with a 4-3 result in penalty kicks.

Sergi Monso scored both of the Broncos' first-round goals. Then in the battle against Simon Fraser, Ori Kenett delivered a timely penalty kick and then goalkeeper Jason Trejos stepped up for the decisive save.

UCSD's path to Friday's regional championship game required only one victory. The Tritons earned a first-round bye and then topped Western Washington 2-0 in the second round.

With an overall record of 13-5-3, the Broncos have posted a 5-2 mark on the road.

In a 4 p.m. kickoff on Friday at Triton Soccer Stadium, St. Edward's will take on Midwestern State for the South Central title. The winner of that matchup will advance to challenge the winner of the CPP-UCSD showdown.
