BILLINGS, Mont. - With
Mark Huizar and
Ruben Dominguez leading the way, Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country placed third at the NCAA West Region Championships to advance to nationals for the fourth-consecutive year.
The Broncos placed their top five runners in the top 28 individual spots, including Huizar at No. 6 with a time of 30:08.94 and Dominguez at No. 12 with a 30:34.34 mark. Huizar's time is just a few seconds behind his 2015 regional mark, which ranks at No. 2 on the CPP all-time leaderboard.
With Montana State Billings serving as the host of Saturday's meet, the course lasted 10,000 meters - the same distance that the Broncos will encounter at the NCAA Division II National Championships to be held Saturday, Nov. 19 in Saint Leo, Fla.
As a team this Saturday, CPP totaled 90 points. Ranking ahead of the Broncos were No. 1 Chico State with 45 points and Alaska Anchorage with 81 points.
Senior
Brandon Ferguson put together an impressive performance, crossing the line in 30:42.12 to be the third-best Broncos' finisher at No. 19. That also puts him at No. 7 on the CPP all-time leaderboard for the 10,000-meter distance.
Not far behind in 25th was
Grant Stromberg, who posted a mark of 30:57.62. He moves up to No. 12 all-time for the Broncos. Rounding out the top five for CPP on Saturday was
Teague Senninger, who earned a 31:00.91 time that moves him into 14th all-time for the Broncos.
