Men's Soccer Set for First Round Showdown

NCAA West Regional Tournament Page

SEATTLE –
After falling to Sonoma State in September's conference opener, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will have a chance to avenge that defeat this Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Traveling to Seattle for the start of postseason play, the fifth-seeded Broncos will take on fourth-seeded Sonoma State at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to Saturday' second-round matchup against top-seeded Simon Fraser. Both of those games will be held at the Interbay Stadium, home of the Seattle Pacific soccer programs.

The other half of the six-team Men's Soccer West Region field will be played out this week at UC San Diego.

Although all of the qualifying teams start with a clean slate this week, CPP carries a 12-5-2 overall record while the Seawolves own a 10-4-5 mark.

Last week, the Broncos fell to Cal State LA in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament opening round. Sonoma defeated the Golden Eagles in the semifinal and then lost to UCSD in the tournament title match.

Looking back at the CCAA opener on Sept. 16 in Rohnert Park, the Seawolves got on the scoreboard early with a goal at the 3:49 mark. Then, another score gave Sonoma a 2-0 edge heading into halftime. Sergi Monso tallied a goal for the Broncos in the 70th minute but CPP couldn't net the equalizer and the game finished at 2-1.

Thursday's game in Seattle will mark the Broncos' third all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament with the previous occasions in 1998 and 2015. Last year, CPP went 4-1 en route to becoming the D-II National Runner-Up.
