Baseball Set For 5-Game Week: 2 home, 3 Away

POMONA, Calif. – With a 6-3 record thus far on the season, the nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team has a busy week ahead of them. The Broncos will play their final two pre-conference games on Monday and Wednesday and then head north to start California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday.

First up, the Broncos will host the Vanguard University Lions at Scolinos Field on Monday. The contest, with a designated 6 p.m. start time, will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two squads and the first since CPP's two-game sweep in 2011.

The all-time record between the two teams stands in the Broncos' favor as they have won all four contests played. The Lions, who play for the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) have thus far secured an 11-3 mark on the season, complete with a 4-2 mark in conference play.

CPP will head into the contest looking to halt its current two-game skid after losses to two conference rivals in non-conference matchups. The Broncos have tallied a 6-3 mark thus far this season.

After hosting the Lions on Monday, CPP will host the Azusa Pacific Cougars on Wednesday. The contest at Scolinos Field will be another game under the lights as game time is set for 6 p.m. Heading into the contest, APU has secured a 4-8 record thus far this season.

During the 2015 season, the two teams met three times and CPP emerged victorious in two of those matchups. On Feb. 13, the Cougars defeated the Broncos with a walkoff single in the tenth inning. The following day, the Green and Gold bested the Cougars at Scolinos Field. With a tied series-tally, the two squads met in the West Region Tournament hosted by the Broncos at Mt. SAC.

In the West Region semifinal matchup, the Broncos secured the 6-2 victory. CPP then topped the UC San Diego Tritons to secure the trip to Cary, N.C. for the NCAA Division II Championships.

After hosting the two games, the Green and Gold will head north for the 2016 start of CCAA play. They will play visitor to the San Francisco State Gators at Maloney Field. Thus far this season, the Gators have secured 5-4 record. They will first host Sonoma State on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup, then start CCAA play against the Broncos on Saturday.

Opening day at Maloney Field will be a double-header as the Broncos and Gators will meet at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. After the CCAA openers for both squads, the series finale will be on Sunday as the teams meet at 11 a.m. Last year, the Broncos won the series against the Gators, topping them in 3-of-4 games in San Francisco. CPP's second win in the May. 2 double-header gave them sole possession of first place in the CCAA and earned them the CCAA regular season champions title.

The Broncos will return home the following week to host the Sonoma State Seawolves in a three-game series at Scolinos Field.
