Baseball Hosts Sonoma State For 3-Game Series

By: Hannah Harrer

POMONA, Calif. - The No.10 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team returns home this weekend to host the Sonoma State Seawolves in a three-game series.

The Broncos return to Scolinos Field after a road trip to San Francisco State, where they won two of the three games against the Gators last weekend. The Green and Gold have an overall record of 10-4, and are currently 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

The Seawolves currently hold a 4-2 record against conference opponents and are 6-9 overall on the season. In 2015, the Broncos split with Sonoma State, winning the second and fourth game of the series, but dropping the first and third. Overall, the teams have met 85 times and have a nearly even record as CPP has won 39 times, and the Seawolves have won 46.

Thus far this season, several of the Broncos' pitchers have been stand-outs. One is Peter Bayer, who currently holds an earned run average (ERA) of 1.65. In his 16.1 innings pitched he has tallied 32 strikeouts and allowed only three earned runs. Bayer earned the CCAA Pitcher of the Week award this week, his second of the season. Junior returner Ryan Olson continues to do well; after the weekend he holds a 1.10 ERA and has allowed only two earned runs. Newcomer Tyler Rowe has had a strong start to the season, and is currently leading the team's ERA at 1.08. Rowe has had three starts and has appeared in four games.

Junior infielder Chris Stratton is currently leading the team's batting average with a .388, and had fantastic weekend tallying six runs, an RBI, and a .450 slugging percentage. Caleb Romo, a senior infielder, tallied five RBIs last weekend and is currently hitting .344 with a .656 slugging percentage. Jared James also had a stellar weekend, earning five runs, four RBIs, and a slugging percentage of .632. Currently, the Broncos have five players with a batting average of over .300.

This upcoming weekend the schedule has changed due to rain in the forecast. The games against Sonoma State will now be played on Friday, March 4th at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and the final game of the series will be played on Saturday, March 5th at 1:00 p.m.
