West Region Tournament Central

INDIANAPOLIS –
Carrying a 35-17 record against Division II opponents this season, the No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team earned the No. 3 spot in the West Region. The NCAA released the field for all eight brackets in its selection show on Sunday evening.

To start the NCAA postseason, the Broncos will challenge Chico State on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Riverside. All of the regional games will be held on the Cal Baptist campus. The West features a six-team field and the playoffs are a double-elimination format. The winner of this week's regional tournament will advance to play in Cary, N.C.

The West Region is headed up by Cal Baptist, who recorded a 39-11 record thus far this season. Set to play the regional host and No. 1 seed CBU is Cal State East Bay, who locked in the sixth seed with a 33-20 season tally, including a second-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Championships.

With the second and fifth seed in the regional, the second contest on day one will feature the Dixie State Trailblazers and the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters. DSU earned the No. 2 seed after a 38-12 record in the 2016 season. The Otters finished second in the CCAA North Division and carry an overall tally of 33-19.

The Broncos finished the regular season and the CCAA Tournament with a record of 35-17 against NCAA D-II opponents. They will challenge the fourth seeded Chico State Wildcats. Chico will enter the game with the title of the CCAA Tournament Champions after its 10-9 win over the Pioneers on Saturday.

This season, the CPP squad holds an even 2-2 record with the Wildcats, most recently falling 6-2 in the CCAA Tournament First Round. In the all-time series, the Chico State team holds the advantage, having won 58 games to the Broncos' 34.

Against the No. 1 seeded CBU Lancers, the Broncos hold an all-time record of 17-5, the two teams' most recent meeting was a 6-1 Bronco win, which secured a three games to one series win.

Dixie State owns the lone victory against the Broncos in the West Region Tournament from the 2015 season, topping the Green and Gold 2-1 at Mt. San Antonio College. The two squads have only met 13 times with the Broncos winning seven of those games.

During this 2016 season, the Broncos have a 3-1 record against the CSUEB squad, sweeping the regular season three-game series, then falling in the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament. Against the Otters, CPP won 2-of-3 games on its home field. The all-time record between the Broncos, Pioneers, and Otters is 30-18, and 27-20, respectively.
