POMONA, Calif. – With first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division all sewn up, the No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team heads into its final week of regular season play. The Broncos will split host duties with the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros.
CPP has amassed a season record of 31-14, complete with a 23-10 record in conference play, good for a five-game lead in the CCAA South Division. The Toros will enter Thursday's 2 p.m. contest at Scolinos Field still vying for a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. This season thus far, the Toros have a record of 14-20 in conference en route to a season tally of 21-25.
In the first regional rankings, released by the NCAA on April 27, the Broncos were listed at fifth place in the Division II West Region. That ranking was prior to CPP's four-game sweep of the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The second regional rankings poll will be released on Wednesday, May 5.
Last season, the Broncos and Toros were no strangers to each other, meeting a total of six times throughout the year. CPP got the best of the engagements, winning five of the games, including two victories in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The final meeting, a 4-0 victory, earned the Green and Gold the CCAA Tournament Title for the first time in the tournament's 17-year history.
All-time the series between the two programs stands in the Broncos' favor as they have won 108 games to the Toros' 86.
Thursday and Friday will be the Broncos' final two games of the regular season at Scolinos Field. The series opener on Thursday will be Heroes Day at the ballpark as all military, police, and firefighting personnel will receive free admittance. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free customized water bottle courtesy of Veterans Resource Center on campus.
