POMONA, Calif. – A 4-3 win in the final regular season home game at Scolinos Field stretches the No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos winning streak to eight. Senior Night was a success for the Green and Gold as 11 members of the squad were honored.
The seniors who played their last regular season game at Scolinos Field were
Jared James,
Ryan Webberley,
Caleb Romo,
Daniel Pitts,
Michael Erb,
Matt Reynoso,
Michael Zidek,
Nicholas Bruno,
Zach Williams, and
Max Bethell. The final senior for the Broncos was
Peter Bayer.
Winning the contest advanced the Broncos to a 33-14 overall record on the season, complete with a 25-10 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The loss for the Toros moves them to a conference tally of 14-22 en route to their season record of 21-27.
Starting on the mound for the Broncos and earning his eighth win of the season was Bethell. The CPP co-captain allowed seven hits over five innings with three runs. The victory improves him to an 8-4 mark on the season.
The run production for both squads began early. In the top of the first, a single through the left side scored the Toros' leadoff runner who had gotten a hit to lead off the game.
CPP answered back in the bottom half of the inning, posting three runs of their own to take the lead.
Jason Padlo doubled to right center to score James who had singled to lead off the game. Moving over on the double was Webberley.
The next at bat after Padlo's double, Romo did the same, but down the left field line. Scoring on the play were both Webberley and Padlo.
In the second, the visitors tied it up as a double to right center scored a pair of runners, evening the score at three runs apiece. The score remained such until the fifth when the Padlo reached on an infield single that scored James for the Broncos' go-ahead run.
The final score in the ballgame was 4-3 in the home team's favor.
With a double header slated for noon at the Toros' home field, the final two games of the regular season are set for Saturday.
