POMONA, Calif. – With seven home matches in September, there will be plenty of early opportunities for Cal Poly Pomona fans to see the men's soccer team in action at Kellogg Field.
After finishing as the National Runner-Up for NCAA Division II last year, the Broncos will open their 2016 campaign on Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Montana State Billings. Last year, the Yellowjackets went 8-6-4. Following Thursday's matchup between MSUB and the Broncos, the CPP women's soccer squad will host Point Loma.
The Broncos' men's soccer program will tackle another Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) team on Saturday. Simon Fraser will take on CPP for a 7 p.m. kickoff. In 2015, SFU put together an impressive record at 10-3-4 to place second in the GNAC standings.
Although the Broncos' three All-American honorees departed after concluding their season seasons in 2015, the 2016 roster features plenty of returning talent. Senior
Leonel Espinoza will rejoin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Freshman of the Year
Nadeer Ghantous on defense.
Senior
Eshel Chardon and junior
Sergi Monso will lead the group of starting midfielders while
Luis Najera Jr. is poised to bolster the team's attack after missing most of last year.
After going 17-3-3 last year to set numerous program records, the Broncos have plenty at stake this September. Most notably, CPP will aim for early season momentum and a chance to build on its home record through 2014 and 2015: 18-0-1.
Fourth-year head coach
Yossi Raz (
@coachyossi) has amassed an overall record of 41-11-9 as a Bronco and he'll be joined once again by associate head coach
Adam Reeves and assistant coaches
Brian Lanoye,
Brent Broadhurst and
Jose Garcia.
