POMONA, Calif. – Continuing a stretch of four-consecutive road matches, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team will play three contests away from home this week.
On Tuesday, the Broncos will challenge Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer Field. APU has started strong in 2016 with a mark of 2-1-1 that includes lopsided wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State L.A.
After that matchup, CPP will start conference play in Northern California. On Friday, the Broncos take on Sonoma State (2-1-1) in Rohnert Park at 12:30 p.m. Then on Sunday, CPP plays Humboldt State (1-4) in Arcata with an 11:30 a.m. kickoff. Friday's opponent - the SSU Seawolves - reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year and the squad was ranked within the top 25 for NCAA Division II earlier in the 2016 season.
The Broncos have battled through a challenge non-conference schedule that started with the PacWest defending champion and the 2015 NCAA Division II national champion all in the opening week of play. Although CPP is still aiming for its first win of the season, there have still been plenty of bright spots for the Broncos.
Stephanie Rodriguez and
Lauren Miller own the team's two goals as
Sydney Yates and
Daisy Duran also continue to put plenty of pressure on the opposition's defense. Yates leads the team in shots with 13 while Duran has contributed seven of her own.
So far, the team leaders in minutes played are goalkeeper
Ricki Ives and defender
Natalie Di Angelo as both have played every minute of the first three matches.
The Fall Quarter begins for CPP students next Thursday, Sept. 22. One day later, Broncos' women's soccer will host San Francisco at 7 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer program. Through a sponsorship with University Housing Services, free tumblers will be distributed to the first 100 CPP students who arrive.
