ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Sonoma State Friday afternoon in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener.
The result drops CPP to a record of 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Seawolves have started the year 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in CCAA action.
SSU outshot the Broncos Friday by a margin of 16-8, although the shots on goal tally was equal at 4-4.
Hailey James stayed active for the CPP offense, attempting three shots while putting two on target.
The Broncos kept the Seawolves off the scoreboard until the 71st minute, when Bella Amyx started the scoring opportunity by throwing the ball in to Taylor Enzler. After a cross by Enzler, Katie Mohr knocked in the goal to put SSU ahead 1-0.
About nine minutes later, the Seawolves stretched their lead to 2-0. At the 79:46 mark, Amyx lifted a header over Broncos' goalkeeper
Ricki Ives and into the back of the net.
In the final minute of regulation, CPP sophomore
Sydney Yates hit the crossbar but the Seawolves still managed to keep the shutout intact until the final whistle.
To conclude its trip to Northern California, CPP will return to action Sunday at Humboldt State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. On Friday afternoon, HSU defeated Cal State San Bernardino 3-2 in both teams' CCAA opener.
