ARCATA, Calif. - Competing with one less player for the final six minutes of action, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team sustained its offensive pressure and got a game-winning header from
Hailey James in the 105th minute to top Humboldt State 2-1.
The result improves the Broncos' marks to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Humboldt falls to 2-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.
The Jacks got on the scoreboard first when Bridget Daley tallied goal at the 53:39 mark. CPP netted the equalizer in the 81st minute, when
Sydney Yates assisted on a goal by
Daisy Duran. For Duran, a San Dimas, it marked her first goal of the season and the 11th of her Broncos' career.
As the game progressed into overtime, the intensity of the match continued at a high level. In the 97th minute, Broncos' goalie
Ricki Ives made a tremendous diving stop on a header by the Jacks' Daley. After a collision with the HSU goalkeeper a few minutes later, Yates was issued a red card at the 99:47 mark.
Despite playing shorthanded, CPP didn't back away from its pursuit of the victory. In the 105th minute,
Hannah Havelind sent a strong header that was punched out by HSU goalkeeper Alex Dumas. The rebound chance deflected to James, who knocked in a header for the game winner.
The Broncos outshot the Jacks 22-15 and led by a wide margin in corner kicks attempted, 13-2.
CPP returns to action Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against San Francisco State. The first 100 CPP students arriving to the 4:30 p.m. soccer doubleheader will receive a free tumbler courtesy of University Housing Services.
