POMONA, Calif. – With sophomore
Sydney Yates leading the way Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay by a 2-1 margin.
Yates scored both of the Broncos' goals, raising her season total to three and already matching her 2015 output. The result moves CPP to 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as the team rises up to third in the conference standings.
It took just 14 seconds for the Broncos to get on the scoreboard Sunday.
Tori Tappero found
Stephanie Rodriguez with a pass and after charging into the box, she slipped a pass across the six-yard area and Yates lined a shot into the back of the net. For Tappero and Rodriguez, it marked their first assists of the season.
In the 20th minute, Yates put together another scoring opportunity. Stealing the ball away from the Otters, she dribbled just inside the top of the box and ripped a shot into the upper left corner as the Monterey Bay goalkeeper leapt unsuccessfully to her right.
The Otters were able to get a goal late in the first half, when Kathlyne Makshanoff blasted a long shot over the head of CPP netminder
Ricki Ives.
The Broncos' defense held tough in the second half though, limiting the visiting squad to just three shots in the final 45 minutes. CPP finished with seven corner kick chances while the Otters didn't earn any.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 12:30 p.m. road match against Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday.
