D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase
POMONA, Calif. – Just a few days after returning from Hawaii, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will travel to La Jolla for four matches in a three-day span at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase held at UC San Diego.
This week's action starts on Thursday for CPP with a 4 p.m. match against Northwest Nazarene of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). Friday's schedule features a pair of matches for the Broncos, including 10 a.m. versus Point Loma of the PacWest and 5 p.m. against Central Washington of the GNAC.
The fourth and final contest of the week will be Saturday's 12:30 p.m. match with BYU Hawaii. CPP played BYUH in the season opener last week and dropped a 3-2 result. Ticket prices for this week's tournament are: $10/day general admission; $5/day for visiting students, children and seniors; free for children 7 and under.
Currently, the Broncos hold 2-2 record after recording a 3-2 comeback win in their most recent action.
The CPP attack has been bolstered by a trio of Broncos with
Deanna Blaine,
Andrea Bosnic and
Alexandra Gresham all averaging more than two kills per set. Defensively, junior
Samantha Figueroa has contributed 4.39 digs per set. Sophomore
Desi Martin has shined in the blocking category, posting an average of 0.88 per set.
In examining this week's opponents, the Broncos start off with a tough opponent in Northwest Nazarene. After going 19-9 last year, NNU has started 2016 with a 3-0 mark that includes a sweep of CCAA challenger Cal State Monterey Bay. Point Loma put together a 20-10 record in 2015 and to start this season, the Sea Lions are 1-3. Central Washington went 20-8 one year ago and began this year at 0-4 after battling tough competition in the Midwest last week. Another above-.500 squad last year at 15-13, BYU Hawaii owns a 2-3 through the early stages of 2016.
The D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase wil conclude the Broncos' eight-match road swing to start the season. CPP will return home to play its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Azusa Pacific. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
