Broncos Drop Doubleheader In Series Loss to LA

POMONA – The offense struggled for the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team who dropped both games of a doubleheader against Cal State Los Angeles as the Golden Eagles swept the Broncos.
 
 
THE BASICS:

GAME ONE:
GAME SUMMARY:
  • The Golden Eagles struck first in a game that saw little offense, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
  • CSULA scored the first run off a walk followed by a double before hitting another double with two outs to go up 2-0.
  • CPP scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Brennan McKenzie hit a solo home run.
  • The Broncos had a chance in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting two on base with one out but were unable to capitalize.
  • CSULA added another run in the ninth inning, hitting two more doubles to score the insurance run.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Cody Martin finished with two hits to lead the Broncos while McKenzie recorded the lone RBI for CPP.
  • Dylan Francis picked up the loss for the Broncos as he went to 1-2 overall on the year. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs off five hits while striking out 10 total batters.
  • Ben Mora threw three innings in relief, giving up on one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Eagles came out swinging in game two as six straight batters reached base, taking an early 5-0 lead over CPP.
  • Martin kicked things off for the Broncos in the bottom of the inning, hitting a solo homerun to center field to chip away at the lead
  • The Broncos added one run in the second as Jacob Bernardy grounded out to score Matt Manskar and another run in the third inning when Nic Hernandez singled to score McKenzie after he stole second base.
  • CSULA added to their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI triple to go up 6-3 midway through.
  • McKenzie collected his second home run of the day in the fifth inning to come within two runs of the lead at 6-4.
  • The Golden Eagles blanked the Broncos for the final two innings to seal the victory and the series sweep.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Michael Gomez started on the mound for CPP, throwing 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs off seven hits with two strikeouts to take the loss.
  • McKenzie finished with two hits along with an RBI and two runs.
  • Peter Beattie finished the game with 2 2/3 innings pitched, giving up one hit with a strikeout.
 
 
Outside the Box:
  • McKenzie hit a home run in every game of the series, tallying all four of his season homers.
  • This marks the first time CSULA has swept the Broncos since the 2007 season and the first time CPP has been swept by a CCAA team since 2013.
 
COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will begin the next series on the road once again as they travel to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Saturday before finishing the series at home next Sunday.
