Broncos Sweep Twin Bill vs. Stanislaus State

TURLOCK – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Stanislaus State, holding on to a 10-9 win in game one before edging out the Warriors in game two 2-1 at the Warrior Baseball Field.

GAME ONE:
GAME SUMMARY:
  • Nic Hernandez opened the scoring for the Broncos in the first inning, hitting a single to center field to score Cody Martin.
  • The Broncos added to their lead in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-0 advantage early in the contest. Matt Manskar forced a bases-loaded walk before a two-RBI single by Martin and a single to center field by Cesar Lopez.
  • Stanislaus scored their first run of the game in the third inning, hitting a solo home run to left field.
  • With the bases loaded, CPP added two more runs in the fourth as Drew Cowley and Brennan McKenzie earned walks, giving the Broncos a 7-1 lead.
  • The scoring continued for the Broncos in the fifth as Lopez hit a single to center field, scoring Martin and Manskar to go up 9-1.
  • The Warriors fought back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs, including a bases clearing triple to cut the lead to 9-6.
  • CPP scored what would be the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as Hernandez singled, allowing Martin to score for the fourth time.
  • STAN added two runs in the ninth but couldn't overcome the added run by the Broncos in the top of the inning.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Lopez finished with three hits and three RBIs while Martin tallied three hits with two RBIs and four runs scored.
  • Also finishing with two RBIs was Hernandez who totaled two hits while three other Broncos earned one RBI.
  • Dylan Francis started on the mound for CPP, tossing four 2/3 innings, giving up six runs, one earned, with five hits and six strikeouts.
  • Darin May picked up the win for CPP, tossing two innings with no hits and two strikeouts.
 
 
GAME TWO:
GAME SUMMARY:
  • Game two of the day saw much less offense with the Broncos taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Martin crossed home plate after a wild pitch.
  • Stanislaus tied the game in the second inning, earning a run after an errant throw by second base.
  • The game wasn't tied for long as the Broncos came back to score in the top of the third as Cowley singled to right field, scoring Martin once again.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • For the second appearance in a row, Tim Holdgrafer tossed a complete seven inning game, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out three batters.
  • Martin earned both runs for the Broncos, finishing with three hits while Logan Gopperton tallied two hits in two at bats.
