Broncos Cruise to 14-3 Win in Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. - The nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised to a 14-3 victory in its season opener on Friday at UC Colorado Springs.

The Broncos' offense collected 16 hits and used a seven-run rally in the fifth inning to outdistance themselves from the Mountain Lions. Each of the CPP starters tallied at least one hit.

Second baseman Ryon Knowles led the way with a 4-for-5 showing, including two runs and two runs batted in. Broncos' shortstop Drew Cowley produced a big day out of the cleanup spot in the lineup, going 2-for-5 with four RBI.

The CPP pitching staff kept UCCS relatively quiet as Tim Holdgrafer tossed the first 4.2 innings and scattered five hits en route to earning the win. In relief, Drew Atherton and Troy Bethell both posted scoreless outings. Bethell struck out three of the nine batters he faced.

In the top of the first, the Broncos jumped out to a lead before the Mountain Lions could record an out. Brennan McKenzie led off with a double and Christian Moya followed with a triple to put CPP up 1-0. The Broncos added two more runs in that frame, including an RBI double by Knowles.

The major damage from the CPP offense came in the fifth, which featured three-consecutive doubles from Knowles, Alex Kline and Dante Palacio. Cowley capped off the inning with a three-run homer to put the Broncos up 11-1.

The Broncos and Mountain Lions will battle once again Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Pacific.
