POMONA -- Nick Peifer went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored as the 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team captured a 5-2 victory over No. 14 UC San Diego in game one of the four-game series on a chilly Thursday evening at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos (7-4 overall) have won five straight games to remain undefeated in CCAA play at 5-0. The Tritons, meanwhile, stumble to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in conference action.
Nic Hernandez broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI single through the right side that scored Peifer for the 1-0 lead. An inning later,
Patrick Vizcaino padded the lead with a sacrifice fly that scored
Drew Cowley to make it 2-0 in favor of CPP.
UC San Diego got a run back in the fifth when Brandon Stewart was able to scamper home on a wild pitch, but in CPP's next at bat,
Ryon Knowles continued his hot streak at the plate, singling home Peifer for the 3-1 advantage for the home team. Peifer again touched home plate in the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch for a 4-1 lead, but then UCSD loaded the bases in the eighth, only to get one run home on a walk before
Darin May came on in relief to stop the bleeding and induce an inning-ending groundout to leave the bases loaded.
The hosts added another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a
Angel Ortiz double that scored
Cesar Lopez, accounting for the 5-2 final. May earned his third save of the season after retiring the 2-3-4 hitters in order to end the ballgame.
Jeremy Taylor (2-0) got the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings without allowing a hit. He came on for starter
Troy Bethell, who went the first 4.2 innings and gave up four hits and a run, striking out eight. Hernandez turned in a 2 for 3 night at the plate with a RBI.
Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego will go at it again Friday night at 6:00 pm, also at Scolinos Field in Pomona before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla.
