POMONA -- Senior right-hander
Tim Holdgrafer became just the seventh player in Cal Poly Pomona baseball history to throw a no-hitter in a 9-0 thrashing of No. 14 UC San Diego on Friday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The 16th-ranked Broncos (8-4) remain undefeated in the CCAA this season at 6-0. The Tritons fell to 7-4 (2-4 CCAA).
Holdgrafer threw 120 pitches in his no-hit effort, giving up four walks and striking out 11 while improving to a perfect 4-0 on the year. While he is the seventh in program history to throw a no-hitter, he is only the second to do it in a nine-inning ballgame. The last to toss a nine-inning no-hitter was Efren Lira back in 2003 against Stanislaus State.
Not only was Holdgrafer dominating on the mound, but the Broncos bats were on fire Friday night against the Tritons, scattering 14 hits that led to the nine-run blowout.
Nic Hernandez led the assault, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored.
Ryon Knowles and
Cesar Lopez each had two RBI.
Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up the four-game series with UC San Diego on Saturday at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
