Holdgrafer Stymies Royals' Bats In 3-0 Shutout

POMONA -- Tim Holdgrafer tossed seven shutout innings and struck out six, and Brennan McKenzie homered for the second time this season as the No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team earned a 3-0 home-opening victory over Hope International on a chilly Friday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The Broncos snap a three-game skid, rising to 2-3 overall.  The Royals suffered their first loss of the 2019 campaign, falling to 6-1.

Holdgrafer allowed just three hits to the 27 batters he faced, walking four.  He only allowed two runners beyond first base en route to his second win of the year.  He gave way to Troy Bethell in the eighth before Darin May came on in the ninth to retire the side for his first save of the season.

Offensively, the Broncos broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Christian Moya laced a one-out triple deep in the left center gap, then came home to score on a groundout by Nic Hernandez for the 1-0 lead.  McKenzie's solo bomb to left field came in the fifth inning to make it 2-0, then another run crossed the plate in the seventh when Logan Gopperton doubled home Nick Peifer from first base to account for the 3-0 win.

Moya and Gopperton each finished with two hits while McKenzie and Peifer had the other two for CPP on Friday.

Three of the four hits by the Royals came off the bat of HIU leadoff hitter Juan Gonzalez.

Cal Poly Pomona and Hope International wraps up the brief two-game series Saturday at 2:00 pm at Scolinos Field.
