SEASIDE, Calif. -- Brennan McKenzie had two hits and two RBI and
Nic Hernandez went 3 for 7, but the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team lost twice to host Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at the Otter Sports Center in Seaside.
The Broncos fall to 16-21 overall and 14-17 in the CCAA. The Otters rise to 23-14 (21-10 CCAA).
In the opener,
Dante Palacio broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second when he reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing
Nick Peifer to score. CSUMB came back with the tying run in the third and go-ahead run in the fifth before CPP responded with another game-tying run in the sixth on an
Cesar Lopez RBI to make it 2-2.
In the seventh inning, the Otters came away with two runs, then in the Broncos' next at bat in the top of the eighth,
Ryon Knowles singled home Hernandez to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, CSUMB plated five runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the 9-3 win.
In the nightcap, CPP again got the scoring started in the top of the second. Peifer scored on a throwing error by the Otter shortstop before McKenzie delivered a two run single, scoring Palacio and
Drew Cowley to make it 3-0 in favor of CPP.
It was in the bottom of the fourth that Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for eight runs and Cal Poly Pomona couldn't recover, falling 8-3.
The four game series between CPP and CSUMB will wrap up with a single game Sunday at 11:00 am in Seaside.
