POMONA, Calif. - On Friday morning, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team will play in the semifinal round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships.
For the Broncos, this marks the ninth all-time appearance in the CCAA postseason. CPP started this year's playoff run with a 2-0 home win over UC San Diego in a first-round game this past Sunday.
Up next, the Broncos will challenge Chico State Friday at 11 a.m. The two squads met earlier in the year in Chico and the Wildcats secured a 3-1 win. Since that result, CPP has put together a 7-1-1 record. At 13-4-1 overall, the 2014 Broncos have totaled the most program wins since the 2001 squad.
This weekend's final two rounds of the CCAA Championships are being played in Turlock on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus.
Aside from the coveted CCAA crown, there are plenty of other playoff implications with this weekend's matches. In the latest West Region rankings released Wednesday, CPP held the No. 3 spot. A total of six West Region squads will advance into the NCAA postseason, with the entire field set to be revealed Monday in a NCAA.com selection show.
Senior midfielder
Alison Sauve continues to play a pivotal part in the Broncos' success. She scored the game-tying goal in the regular season finale last week against Cal State L.A. and with that performance, Sauve earned CCAA Player of the Week honors.
The star of the game on Sunday against UCSD proved to be freshman goalkeeper
Ricki Ives. In addition to several key saves in the regular flow of action, she also stopped a penalty kick that would have evened the score.
