POMONA, Calif.
– When a collegiate student-athlete starts out as a freshman, many goals are put in place.

Individually, All-Conference and All-America honors are up for grabs. As a team, winning conference and national titles is the mission.

None of those accomplishments can be achieved without a qualified support staff and at the top of that list are sports medicine professionals.

When Jessica Doerner talks about her successful collegiate career at Cal Poly Pomona, she's quick to thank the Cal Poly Pomona athletic trainers Ruem Malasarn, Alexis Barnagian Jacey, Michael Anderson and the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) staff for helping to keep her on the volleyball court while always keeping her health as the top priority.

In battling back from injuries throughout her time as a Bronco, Doerner spent many hours in the CPP athletic training room and also at PVHMC with Rick Rossman, Associate Director of Physical Therapy and the hospital's physical therapists.

"The entire Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center staff is very personable," Doerner says. "They're honest with you and they want to push you to recover while helping you become free of pain."

According to Doerner, the relationship makes sense because both groups take the same approach. The longtime partnership between the Broncos and PVHMC has continued to grow and it has helped countless CPP student-athletes. Dr. Duane Styles, who serves as a PVHMC physician and the director of the hospital's Sports Medicine Center, has also been instrumental to the Broncos' success.

"[Dr. Styles'] accessibility has been a great resource to our athletic training staff over the years," Barnagian Jacey said. "We always know we can reach out to him when we need help in facilitating care for our student-athletes."

The team approach in care helped Doerner put up impressive statistics as a Bronco: 925 kills, 368 digs and 187 blocks. Her kill total ranks 10th in the Broncos' all-time record book. At the conclusion of her senior season in 2013, Doerner earned a spot on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Team.

"The relationship between Cal Poly Pomona and PVHMC started prior to my arrival and it continues to grow and improve each year," Malasarn said.

From annual pre-participation physicals to office visits and post-operative care, the PVHMC staff - led by Styles and Rossman - has been key in keeping the CPP student-athletes on the field and on the court. The relationship between the Broncos and Pomona Valley staff extends beyond the two entities though and into the local community.

"Together as a group," Anderson says, "we've volunteered time covering events like the Fairplex Holiday Half Marathon as well as providing services to local high schools in the form of pre-participation screenings and game coverage."
