POMONA, Calif. - Six days after a five-set thriller against Cal State L.A., the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will return to action Friday at 7 p.m. as they travel to take on the Gators of San Francisco State.
Last Saturday's fifth set comeback victory over CSULA gave the Broncos a 5-3 record, including a 3-2 tally in conference play. CPP's next opponent - SF State - holds a 4-5 overall, marking up a 2-2 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
CPP owns a two-match win streak after beating both Cal State Dominguez Hills and CSULA at Darlene May Gym. The temporary transition back to the Broncos' former court had no negative effects for CPP.
Saturday's win over the Golden Eagles proved to be a team effort with four players recording 10 or more kills and five players totaling double-digit digs. Freshman
Deanna Blaine collected 16 kills and 12 digs, earning her fourth double-double performance in the year's first eight matches.
Christen Williams recorded seven block assists while adding 12 kills in that match. Williams is the 4th-ranked player in the CCAA with a .371 hitting percentage.
Also helping the defensive effort was junior libero
Tatiana Martinez, who registered a career-high 20 digs.
Zoe Herrera finished with 18 digs of her own and she's reached double-digit digs in each of the first eight matches of 2014.
Despite the Broncos falling behind 11-5 in the final frame, CPP didn't back down and got a series of clutch kills from senior middle blocker and BroncoAthletics.com Athlete of the Week
Lauren Jones to help pull even at 13-13 and again at 14-14. A pair of late errors on L.A. helped the Broncos wrap up the 3-2 victory.
The spectacular blocking of CPP has earned them a No. 13 spot on the national leaderboard in the category of blocks per set.
On Saturday at 7 p.m., the Broncos will travel to Rohnert Park to take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State. SSU holds a 4-4 record with a 2-2 tally in conference play.
