POMONA, Calif. – After finishing the 2015 regular season with the second seed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team will host the Cal State LA Golden Eagles in the semifinal round of the CCAA Championship Tournament on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
The 2015 regular season saw the Broncos finish with an overall 11-2-3 tally, complete with an 8-2-2 mark in conference play. For the first time in program conference history, the Green and Gold will host the Championship Tournament.
With the fourth and final game of the evening on Friday, the Broncos and Cal State LA will be playing for the second time this season. During the first meeting on Sept. 27, the CPP squad topped their SoCal rivals 1-0 on a goal by Patricia Yrizar.
This tournament will mark the second-consecutive season that the Broncos have earned a seed in the conference playoffs. Last season, the Pomona squad finished the regular season with the number one seed and went on to defeat Stanislaus State in Penalty Kicks in the Championship Tournament finals.
Drawing the number one seed and securing the regular season title in 2015 was the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. With their seeding, they will be the home team in Friday's 4:30 matchup against the Stanislaus State Warriors. After the Broncos' second seeding, the third seed is the Golden Eagles, and the fourth seed is the Warriors.
Making their way into the first round, but not advancing were Sonoma State and UC San Diego, who drew the five and six seeds respectively.
Leading the Broncos offensively was
Christian Gonzalez Diaz, a senior forward from Mission Viejo. The Green and Gold's scoring leader posted 11 goals on the season and with his five-goal weekend, secured the CCAA Player of the Week nod during the final week of regular season play.
After the semifinal round is held at Kellogg Field, there will be a Youth Clinic held at Cal Poly Pomona on the Activity Fields just north of Kellogg Field on Sunday Nov. 8 at 11 am. Kids (8th grade and younger) are encouraged to partake in the free clinic where they will receive expert coaching from CCAA coaches along with snacks and refreshments. Youth will also receive a free ticket to the CCAA Championship matches held at Kellogg Field at 12:30 pm and 3 pm.
Serving as the HostCal Poly Pomona will serve as the hosts of the CCAA Soccer Championships coming up in early November. The conference postseason for women's soccer and men's soccer includes the top six teams, with first-round matches between the numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 seeds having been played at campus sites on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The winners of the first-round matches will face the top two seeds at Kellogg Field at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Championship contests will be played on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Beyond the CCAA ChampionshipsOnce the conference postseason wraps up, the NCAA will unveil its tournament field on Monday, Nov. 9. The top six teams from the West Region will advance and the most recent rankings put CPP at No. 3.
