POMONA, Calif. – On Wednesday, Cal Poly Pomona Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson announced the Athletics Hall of Fame induction class of 2016.
The newest inductees – to be inducted on Feb. 26 – will be Jeff Bonds of men's basketball; Debra Larsen of women's basketball and track and field; Tony Reyes of cross country and track and field; and Mark Wiley of baseball. The Broncos
relaunched their Hall of Fame in 2014 during the university's 75th Anniversary.
"The newest Hall of Fame members embody the longstanding success and rich tradition of Bronco Athletics," Swanson said. "In addition, the opportunity to honor and recognize our Hall of Fame members will be a special part of our university's Homecoming weekend. We are delighted that such a distinguished class will be entering the Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame."
CPP features a storied history of athletics success that includes legendary coaches, Olympic stars and championship performers. As part of the Homecoming weekend, the Broncos will host the "Evening of Champions" to recognize the
current 56 members along with the induction of the four new members.
Jeff Bonds guided the men's basketball program to West Region titles in 2003 and 2005. He earned All-American recognition as a senior and he continues to rank at No. 1 all-time in the program for points scored with 1,777. During his time as a Bronco, CPP men's basketball went 86-31 overall.
Debra Larsen made a monumental impact on two of the Broncos' programs. A seven-time All-American, she guided the CPP women's basketball program to national titles in 1985 and 1986. While competing in track and field, she won the national title in the heptathlon in 1986. As a senior on the basketball court, she received the National Player of the Year award in 1987.
Tony Reyes is one of the top distance runners in the history of Cal Poly Pomona. As a student-athlete, he led men's cross country to a national title in 1983. He became a seven-time All-American, earning two honors in cross country and seven for track and field. Reyes then coached at CPP for 10 years, including time as an assistant for 2014 Hall of Fame inductee Jim Sackett.
Mark Wiley played for the Cal Poly Pomona baseball program from 1968 through 1970. Developing as a pitcher under the tutelage of legendary coach John Scolinos, Wiley collected 15 wins in 1970 while totaling 170 strikeouts, leading Division II in both statistics. The Minnesota Twins drafted Wiley with the 46th overall pick in the 1970 draft, making him the highest draft pick in the history of CPP baseball.
The Feb. 26 ceremony, which will be held in the Bronco Student Center (BSC) Ursa Major, is set to start at 6 p.m. At its conclusion, attendees will be invited to Kellogg Arena for the unveiling of the new Hall of Fame plaques in the lobby. To purchase a ticket for the event, go to
